It seems everyone in the Wilkes- Barre area is looking for ways to get out of the house this winter! Fresh air is good for the soul — not to mention it helps to get the wiggles out of the kids.
We put together a list to help you find fun things to do this winter with your family in Wilkes-Barre (or just a short drive away) during these next few winter months!
1.Take a Hike
Sometimes some cold, crisp, winter fresh air and exercise is just what your body needs to feel refreshed! Taking a hike is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy some family time, and IT'S FREE! We are so lucky to have multiple great walking and hiking trails in our area including Frances Slocum State Park in Wyoming and Ricketts Glenn State Park in Benton, and Seven Tubs Nature Area in Wilkes-Barre.
These are a few of my families favorite places to walk and hike as there are multiple trails with different levels of difficulty and time required to walk them. What are some of your family's favorite spots to take a hike?
2. Sledding
We reached out to some of our awesome Macaroni Kid Wilkes-Barre readers for suggestions to compile this list of some the Valleys favorite sledding spots! Are there any other places you like to go not listed? Share on our FB post!

- Nesbitt Park in Kingston between the Pierce Street and Market Street Bridges

3. Neighborhood Snowball Fight
This is a great snow day or weekend activity to get some local kids together for some outdoor, socially distanced fun! Snowball fights are always fun, but an organized community snowball fight with RULES can take this outdoor activity to the next level of fun! You can see a great article from Kidzworld on how to organize an amazing snowball fight: Snowball Fight Rules Article
4. Build the Perfect Snowman
Do you wanna build a snowman? Apparently there is a science to building the perfect snowman! You can check out a video here shared by USA Today and Amaze Lab on how to build a scientifically perfect snowman: Video
These may not be scientifically perfect but I think my family did a pretty great job on our family of snowman in 2018! Do you have any great snowmen pictures to share? Add them to our FB post HERE
5. Ideas for Snow Fun in your backyard

We are super fortunate here in NEPA to have multiple ski mountains in our backyard! Have you checked out the great family fun offerings Montage Mountain has lately? They offer small group lessons for Adults and Children, Ski passes and rentals, as well as snow tubing for the whole family! If you are looking for discounted rates always check with your school district as they often have family rates available!

Ice skating is nice skating... Did you know there are 57 lakes in Luzerne County? With the temperatures dropping you may be planning some family ice skating outings to a local lake! While we are waiting for these to freeze over, you can check out some lessons or practice at one of our local Ice Skating Rinks currently offering PUBLIC Skates times and lessons!
Here are their websites for more info:
Revolution Ice Center, Pittston
Toyota SportsPlex, Wilkes- Barre
Please note: Macaroni Wilkes-Barre is in no way responsible for trespassing or any injuries, always ensure ice is checked for thickness and safety before skating.
