Crafts to keep kids entertained for a few hours are very hard to come by, but in my house this one passed the test!

This craft only needs a few supplies, has multiple simple steps to keep kids engaged, and is suitable for all ages!

Supplies needed:

  • Balloon (1 per child)
  • Paper- Newspaper, streamer paper/ tissue paper or construction paper
    • Depending on the paper thickness will determine how much paper is needed for this project
  • PVA White Glue
  • Water
  • Paint Brushes (wide brushes)
  • Paint

Steps:

  1. First blow up balloon to an approximate size larger then your child's head
  2. Second mark-off an area of the back of the balloon to keep uncovered for the opening of the mask
  3. Cut or rip paper into approximately 4in x 4in squares
  4. Create a Mix of 25% PVA Glue and 75% Water
  5. Cover the balloon (with the exception of the marked off portion) with pieces of paper
  6. Paint each piece of paper with glue mixture until fully wet
  7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 until the balloon is fully covered with paper (with the exception of the marked off portion) and all of the paper is wet with glue mixture
    1. Make sure the paper covering is thick enough to ensure you cannot see the balloon underneath; 4-5 layers of streamer paper/ tissue paper, less for newspaper or construction paper
  8. Leave to dry
  9. Once you are sure all the paper is dried and hardened you can paint the paper to create a mask. Feel free to get creative here! You can add hair, ears, whiskers, anything to make your mask unique!
  10. Leave paint and accessories to dry
  11. Once the paint is dry you can pop the balloon with a pin or point
  12. Carefully add eye holes if you wish
  13. Enjoy you homemade mask!
