Free Summer - Long Food and Fun at the Park Program Take Home Activity

Food and Fun at the Park is a program that provides free grab-and-go snacks, lunches, and activities at seven Wilkes-Barre City locations: Four parks, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA and the McGlynn Learning Center sites at Boulevard Townhomes and Mineral Springs Village. To combat summer learning loss and provide at-home fun and enrichment, Food and Fun at the Park is providing take-home activities all summer long.

  • Tuesday, July 7th        Skittles Science!
  • Wednesday, July 8th    Toilet Paper Roll Birdfeeders
  • Thursday, July 9th        Take Home Planting Kit
  • Friday, July 10th        Hula Hoop Giveaway

Take-home activities will be provided at each site beginning at 10:00 a.m. for as long as supplies last. Grab-and-Go lunches and snacks are served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Food and Fun at the Park will be in session Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m., until August 14th. Park programs are canceled if it is raining. Food and Fun at the Park serves children in kindergarten through 12th grades. Preschool children are welcome but must be accompanied by a caregiver over the age of 16.

Mt. Zion Food Services is providing the healthy grab-and-go lunches and snacks, the City of Wilkes-Barre and McGlynn Learning Center are providing local sites, and the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board and PA Career Link are providing summer park attendants. Park site supervisors are experienced college interns funded by a state/local internship program grant from the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board in partnership with PA CareerLink. Additionally, the program is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant.

Food and Fun at the Park is held at the following sites maintained by the City of Wilkes-Barre:

  1. Coal Street Park (Coal and North Sherman Streets)
  2. Iron Triangle Playground (corner of Hickory and Metcalf Streets)
  3. Huber Park (Stanton and Huber Streets)
  4. Madison/Flood Park (N. Washington and E. Maple Streets)

Additional sites include:

  1. Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA (40 W. Northampton Street)
  2. McGlynn Learning Center/Boulevard Townhomes (72 Midland Court)
  3. McGlynn Learning Center/Mineral Springs Village (233 Eastview Drive)
