Remember when you were a little girl and you really wanted a pony? I grew up in an era with Rainbow Brite and My Little Pony and remember dressing the ponies in the cute little clothes and brushing their manes. One even had curlers and pajamas that even included slippers! I always dreamed of having a white horse with a rainbow mane just like Starlight. It's every little girls' dream, right? So when I had the opportunity to preview a new series coming to Netflix on May 5th that was about horses, the little girl in me shouted yes, please!
This past Saturday, Macaroni Kid Wilkes-Barre was picked to host a preview party at the Pittston Memorial Library with a few families from our area. We ate like horses, colored our own, and watched two episodes of the show. DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free follows Lucky, a 12-year-old girl that has moved with her father and Aunt Cora to the county so her father can supervise the building of a railroad. A former city girl, Lucky is worried about making friends and fitting in with the other kids. But she quickly befriends a wild horse she names Spirit. Together with her two new friends, Pru and Abigail, and their horses, Chicalinda and Boomerang, they experience many adventures and discover what it truly means to be free.
A coming of age series, inspired by DreamWorks’ Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Spirit Riding Free brings to life three smart, empowered, and relatable main characters, Lucky, Pru and Abigail. From major events like flash floods and blizzards, trainer robbers and banditos, treasure hunts and secret sleepovers, executive producer Aury Wallington (“Sex in the City,” “Veronica Mars” and “Heroes”) has created a world filled strong characters who defy stereotypes and mirror positive images of young viewers on screen.
The show was very cute and charming. It touched on life lessons that children face every day; being the new kid, wanting to fit in, and not being left out. Children deal with trying to figure out who they are and how much they can handle while being pressured by others to be someone they aren't, thinking they know it all and owning up to their mistakes. Spirit Riding Free definitely caters to its audience and although it is geared toward girls, my 3 sons enjoyed it as well. It was a huge hit with all the kids at the party. They can't wait to watch it on Netflix. Lucky, her friends and their trio of horses are an adventurous lot that kids will adore. And they will hopefully learn something along the way.
